The “Standard Script” says that after 55, life becomes a slow slide into polypharmacy and surgical “clean-ups.” I decided to write a different script.
Most of us are “trained” to expect it from media ads, caring for family members and hearing about friends and co-worker experiences: a statin for cholesterol, a pill for the thyroid, an anti-inflammatory for the back, and a scheduled joint replacement “when the time comes.”
I’m here to tell you that the script is optional.
My name is Dave Hartfelder, and for the last eight years, I have turned my life into a rigorous N-of-1 experiment. At 63+, I am living a life that many say is improbable, even impossible:
Unmedicated: I successfully worked with my MD to taper off lifelong thyroid medication by identifying specific environmental and nutritional triggers.
Unoperated: I’ve managed chronic back issues and flat-foot complications that once had me crawling across my floor without surgery or painkillers.
Healthspan Focused: My goal isn’t to live long, it’s to live actively and physically capable of doing all the things I want to do, for as long as I live.
