In Experience Note #7, we established our morning baseline on the smart scale: tracking total weight, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass.
This week, we look at cardiovascular fitness and recovery. By pairing Resting Heart Rate (RHR) and Intensity Minutes with your body composition data, Garmin Connect calculates one of its most motivating metrics: your Fitness Age.
1. How True Resting Heart Rate is Measured
Your genuine resting heart rate is captured while wearing your watch overnight during sleep. It represents the lowest consistent heart rate your body achieves when postural demands, mental stress, and digestion are quieted.
While the watch will estimate a daytime resting heart rate if you only wear it while awake, that number is often artificially elevated by our upright posture, daily movement, and daytime stress or alertness.
· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Tap More (bottom right) Health Stats Heart Rate. Here you will see your daily resting heart rate alongside your high for the day, with tabs at the top to view your 7-day, 4-week, and 1-year trendlines.
2. Understanding Intensity Minutes
The American Heart Association (AHA) and CDC recommend a weekly minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination. Spreading this volume throughout the week ensures progressive training stimulus while leaving room for recovery.
According to the AHA:
· Moderate Intensity (50 pct. – 70 pct. of Max HR): For a 60-year-old with an estimated maximum heart rate of 160 bpm, this equates to roughly 80 to 112 bpm.
· Vigorous Intensity (7 pct. – pct. of Max HR): For that same individual, vigorous exercise falls between 112 and 136 bpm.
Garmin Connect establishes your baseline zones using these age-predicted formulas, then refines them dynamically as your aerobic conditioning improves.
· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Add the Intensity Minutes widget to your “At a Glance” home screen. Tapping it opens your current weekly progress toward your goal, with 7-day, 4-week, and 1-year historical views.
3. Calculating Your Fitness Age
Garmin’s Fitness Age metric estimates whether your body is functioning younger or older than your chronological age. It pulls directly from four primary inputs:
· Vigorous Cardio Days: Reaching at least 70 pct. of maximum heart rate for a minimum of 5 minutes on at least 3 days per week.
· Vigorous Cardio Minutes: Accumulating at least 75 vigorous minutes per week.
· Resting Heart Rate: Lower resting heart rates reflect superior stroke volume and autonomic nervous system tone.
· Body Fat Percentage: Synced directly from your smart scale or manual entry.
· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Tap More Health Stats Fitness Age. Garmin displays your current calculated age, your achievable potential, and specific target areas if any metric needs improvement.
Key Takeaway
Watching your resting heart rate steadily drop while your weekly intensity minutes accumulate provides objective proof that your training is moving your healthspan in the right direction. Lowering your calculated Fitness Age is tangible validation that consistent daily habits compound.
Next week, in Experience Note #9: Finding a Cardio Routine That Works for You, we’ll explore practical ways to accumulate moderate and vigorous intensity minutes without excessive joint wear and tear.
Until then—here’s to building the best version of you!
