In Part 1, we focus on the feedback loop you can establish simply by stepping onto a capable smart scale each morning. For the past several years, I have used the Garmin Index S2 Smart Scale. While bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is not as comprehensive as a clinical DEXA scan, a quality smart scale provides consistent, repeatable trendlines when used under identical conditions (first thing in the morning, fasted, post-bathroom).
1. How the Smart Scale Captures Your Data
The Garmin Index S2 uses BIA—sending an imperceptible electrical signal up through bare feet to estimate body water, bone mass, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass based on tissue resistance.
Multi-User Recognition: It stores profiles for multiple users, recognizing you automatically based on previous metrics.
User Switching: If household members are close in weight, the scale may occasionally select the wrong profile. You can override this by stepping off briefly and firmly tapping the upper-right arrow to cycle to your profile.
The Cycle: Once the feet icon locks in, the display shows your current weight, the delta (+/-) from your prior weigh-in, and cycles through your trend graph, BMI, Body Fat %, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Bone Mass, and Body Water %.
2. The 3 Primary Biometrics I Track
1. Total Body Weight (High-Level Context) Weight is the most common metric, but it tells an incomplete story on its own. It provides a high-level signal of fluid retention, overindulgence, or caloric deficits, but it cannot differentiate between fat loss and muscle wasting.
2. Skeletal Muscle Mass (Defending Against Sarcopenia) Muscle mass is metabolic gold and functional armor. Peak muscle mass naturally begins declining after age 40 —an age-related trajectory known as sarcopenia. Combating this requires consistent resistance training and targeted protein intake.
My personal benchmark is functional: I aim to maintain the ability to bench press at least my body weight for as long as I live. When I began tracking skeletal muscle mass on the scale, I was comfortably benching over my body weight. Monitoring this metric gives me an early warning signal if my training stimulus or recovery nutrition is lagging.
3. Body Fat Percentage (The Sub-20% Lesson) Body fat percentage offers deeper insight into cardiovascular and metabolic health than a simple bathroom weight.
Recently, I ran an N=1 experiment to lower my body fat below 20%—a milestone I likely had not seen since my twenties. While I reached that number, the data revealed an unwanted trade-off: because I was under-fueling and under-consuming protein relative to my training volume, I sacrificed skeletal muscle mass alongside fat.
Tracking both metrics simultaneously alerted me immediately, allowing me to recalibrate my nutrition.
3. Reviewing Trendlines in Garmin Connect
Individual daily weigh-ins fluctuate due to hydration and sodium intake. True progress is visible in the trendlines:
Open the Garmin Connect app.
Navigate to Health Stats—>Weight.
Toggle between 7-Day, 4-Week, and 1-Year views to evaluate long-term slopes for Weight, Body Fat %, and Skeletal Muscle Mass.
