But by age 51, chronic impact strain on my knees and lower back forced me to face reality: running was no longer serving my healthspan.

Losing a beloved routine is tough. Running is simple, accessible, and frictionless—you just lace up your shoes, throw on shorts, and step out the door. But if you are currently fighting chronic joint pain just to log pavement miles, celebrate the years you had with it and transition to low-impact, joint-friendly activities that protect your longevity.

Through extensive trial and error—testing kayaks, paddleboarding, swimming, cushioned treadmills and more—I refined a sustainable three-part cardio protocol that protects my back and knees while hitting every intensity target.

1. Low-Impact Aerobic Base: Road and Stationary Cycling

Over 15 years ago, my wife and I purchased hybrid bikes along with an indoor magnetic trainer stand for the winter months. About twelve years ago, I began riding once or twice weekly, and three years ago I stepped up to a dedicated road bike.

When I bought the road bike, the specialist helping me was an avid runner. We started chatting about running history, and she asked me with a smile:

“Do you know what they call runners as they get older?”

I asked what.

“Cyclists!”

She was right.

The Routine: During the Michigan warm months, I log one 10-to-12-mile, best-effort ride per week on dedicated asphalt trails. This builds a solid aerobic base to support my water skiing.

The Winter Standby: When the snow falls, that same 15-year-old indoor trainer stand hosts a weekly 35-to-40-minute stationary session, tracking heart rate and intensity minutes directly through my Garmin watch and chest strap.

2. Low-Impact Indoor HIIT: The Bowflex Max Trainer

To replace high-impact sprints, I integrated a Bowflex Max M7 Trainer. It combines the smooth pedal motion of an elliptical with the vertical climb of a stair stepper, eliminating ground reaction shock.

The Workout: With 20 levels of resistance, its signature session is a 14-minute High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) protocol consisting of 8 max-effort sprint intervals paired with 8 recovery intervals.

The Output: It burns roughly 200 calories in under 15 minutes, with nearly the entire block registered as vigorous intensity minutes.

Practical Tip: I run one to two of these sessions weekly during the seasonally colder months. While the M7 is no longer manufactured new, Bowflex produces modern equivalents, and lightly used models are widely available on the secondary market for a fraction of original retail.

3. Outdoor Functional HIIT: Slalom Course Water Skiing

My primary athletic passion is slalom course water skiing. I have skied recreationally since age 10, but I didn’t begin learning and running the formal slalom course until the summer I turned 60.

Breaking decade-old bad habits and learning tournament-level body mechanics in my sixties has been the single greatest driver of my overall conditioning. It provides the daily motivation to stay lean, preserve upper-body strength, and maintain cardiovascular endurance.

Beyond the camaraderie of being in the boat with training partners, slalom course skiing is quintessential High-Intensity Interval Training:

The Work Interval: Running a tournament slalom course requires skiing through an entry gate, cutting across the boat wake to clear six alternating buoys, and skiing through the exit gate. At a little over 30 MPH, a complete pass takes roughly 20 seconds of all-out physical effort, generating immense G-forces against the rope.

The Rest Interval: After a pass, you drop into the water while the boat circles around to position for the return run, providing 50 to 70 seconds of passive recovery.

The Volume: A full set consists of 6 to 8 successive passes—translating into a textbook 1:2.5 to 1:3 HIIT work-to-rest ratio.

Garmin recently introduced a dedicated “Water Ski” activity profile on compatible watches, which leverages GPS to track boat speed, course path, and heart rate intensity, letting you see how hard you pull across the wake by the maximum speeds you generate.

Key Takeaway

You do not need to pound the pavement to build world-class cardiovascular health. The key is finding joint-preserving activites that you genuinely love so consistency becomes automatic.

When your cardio routine connects to a sport or activity you are passionate about, training ceases to be a chore and becomes functional preparation for life.

Next week, in Experience Note #10: Strength Training to Defend and Build Muscle Mass as You Age, we’ll look at joint-friendly resistance training routines designed to build strength while keeping you injury-free.

Until then—here’s to building the best version of you!

Disclaimer: Content shared through The UUHF Life is for informational/educational purposes only based on N-of-1 personal experience and research. By pairing Resting Heart Rate (RHR) and Intensity Minutes with your body composition data, Garmin Connect calculates one of its most motivating metrics: your Fitness Age.

1. How True Resting Heart Rate is Measured

Your genuine resting heart rate is captured while wearing your watch overnight during sleep. It represents the lowest consistent heart rate your body achieves when postural demands, mental stress, and digestion are quieted.

While the watch will estimate a daytime resting heart rate if you only wear it while awake, that number is often artificially elevated by our upright posture, daily movement, and daytime stress or alertness.

· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Tap More (bottom right) Health Stats Heart Rate. Here you will see your daily resting heart rate alongside your high for the day, with tabs at the top to view your 7-day, 4-week, and 1-year trendlines.

2. Understanding Intensity Minutes

The American Heart Association (AHA) and CDC recommend a weekly minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination. Spreading this volume throughout the week ensures progressive training stimulus while leaving room for recovery.

According to the AHA:

· Moderate Intensity (50 pct. – 70 pct. of Max HR): For a 60-year-old with an estimated maximum heart rate of 160 bpm, this equates to roughly 80 to 112 bpm.

· Vigorous Intensity (7 pct. – pct. of Max HR): For that same individual, vigorous exercise falls between 112 and 136 bpm.

Garmin Connect establishes your baseline zones using these age-predicted formulas, then refines them dynamically as your aerobic conditioning improves.

· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Add the Intensity Minutes widget to your “At a Glance” home screen. Tapping it opens your current weekly progress toward your goal, with 7-day, 4-week, and 1-year historical views.

3. Calculating Your Fitness Age

Garmin’s Fitness Age metric estimates whether your body is functioning younger or older than your chronological age. It pulls directly from four primary inputs:

· Vigorous Cardio Days: Reaching at least 70 pct. of maximum heart rate for a minimum of 5 minutes on at least 3 days per week.

· Vigorous Cardio Minutes: Accumulating at least 75 vigorous minutes per week.

· Resting Heart Rate: Lower resting heart rates reflect superior stroke volume and autonomic nervous system tone.

· Body Fat Percentage: Synced directly from your smart scale or manual entry.

· Where to find it in Garmin Connect: Tap More Health Stats Fitness Age. Garmin displays your current calculated age, your achievable potential, and specific target areas if any metric needs improvement.

Key Takeaway

Watching your resting heart rate steadily drop while your weekly intensity minutes accumulate provides objective proof that your training is moving your healthspan in the right direction. Lowering your calculated Fitness Age is tangible validation that consistent daily habits compound.

Next week, in Experience Note #9: Finding a Cardio Routine That Works for You, we’ll explore practical ways to accumulate moderate and vigorous intensity minutes without excessive joint wear and tear.

Until then—here’s to building the best version of you!

Disclaimer: Content shared through The UUHF Life is for informational/educational purposes only based on N-of-1 personal experience and research. For the past several years, I have used the Garmin Index S2 Smart Scale. While bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is not as comprehensive as a clinical DEXA scan, a quality smart scale provides consistent, repeatable trendlines when used under identical conditions (first thing in the morning, fasted, post-bathroom).

1. How the Smart Scale Captures Your Data

The Garmin Index S2 uses BIA—sending an imperceptible electrical signal up through bare feet to estimate body water, bone mass, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass based on tissue resistance.

Multi-User Recognition: It stores profiles for multiple users, recognizing you automatically based on previous metrics.

User Switching: If household members are close in weight, the scale may occasionally select the wrong profile. You can override this by stepping off briefly and firmly tapping the upper-right arrow to cycle to your profile.

The Cycle: Once the feet icon locks in, the display shows your current weight, the delta (+/-) from your prior weigh-in, and cycles through your trend graph, BMI, Body Fat %, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Bone Mass, and Body Water %.

2. The 3 Primary Biometrics I Track

1. Total Body Weight (High-Level Context) Weight is the most common metric, but it tells an incomplete story on its own. It provides a high-level signal of fluid retention, overindulgence, or caloric deficits, but it cannot differentiate between fat loss and muscle wasting.

2. Skeletal Muscle Mass (Defending Against Sarcopenia) Muscle mass is metabolic gold and functional armor. Peak muscle mass naturally begins declining after age 40 —an age-related trajectory known as sarcopenia. Combating this requires consistent resistance training and targeted protein intake.

My personal benchmark is functional: I aim to maintain the ability to bench press at least my body weight for as long as I live. When I began tracking skeletal muscle mass on the scale, I was comfortably benching over my body weight. Monitoring this metric gives me an early warning signal if my training stimulus or recovery nutrition is lagging.

3. Body Fat Percentage (The Sub-20% Lesson) Body fat percentage offers deeper insight into cardiovascular and metabolic health than a simple bathroom weight.

Recently, I ran an N=1 experiment to lower my body fat below 20%—a milestone I likely had not seen since my twenties. While I reached that number, the data revealed an unwanted trade-off: because I was under-fueling and under-consuming protein relative to my training volume, I sacrificed skeletal muscle mass alongside fat.

Tracking both metrics simultaneously alerted me immediately, allowing me to recalibrate my nutrition.

3. Reviewing Trendlines in Garmin Connect

Individual daily weigh-ins fluctuate due to hydration and sodium intake. True progress is visible in the trendlines:

Open the Garmin Connect app.

Navigate to Health Stats—>Weight.

Toggle between 7-Day, 4-Week, and 1-Year views to evaluate long-term slopes for Weight, Body Fat %, and Skeletal Muscle Mass.

Key Takeaway

A basic scale only tells you your relationship to gravity. Tracking Weight, Body Fat %, and Skeletal Muscle Mass together ensures you are actively defending muscle while managing metabolic health.

Next week, in Experience Note #8: Biometric Monitoring Part 2, we will examine cardiovascular readiness: Resting Heart Rate, Training Intensity Minutes, and Calculating Fitness Age in Garmin Connect.

Until then—here’s to building the best version of you!

Disclaimer: Content shared through The UUHF Life is for informational/educational purposes only based on N-of-1 personal experience and research. Face, Body, and Hand Soap: Saponified Oils vs. Synthetic Detergents

Over a decade ago, I transitioned to Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Pure-Castile Liquid Soap (Peppermint) for my entire body and hair. What stands out on the label is the sheer simplicity: certified organic, fair-trade plant oils saponified into pure soap and glycerin. While potassium hydroxide appears in the processing stages, none remains in the finished product after saponification is complete.

When looking for a dedicated hand soap across our kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry area, standard “natural” liquid brands still contained synthetic foaming agents and preservatives.

The Solution: We switched to Dr. Bronner’s 4-in-1 Organic Sugar Soap (Peppermint).

Why not the 18-in-1 for sink pumps? Pure Castile soap tends to dry out and clog standard dispenser nozzles (often resulting in an unexpected squirt across the counter). The Organic Sugar formulation is naturally conditioned with organic sucrose and white grape juice, making it pump-friendly while keeping the mild antibacterial benefits of real peppermint essential oil.

Vessel Upgrade: Rather than relying on disposable plastic containers, we use refillable glass and stainless-steel pump bottles, replenishing them from larger bulk sizes to minimize plastic waste.

2. The Hidden Floss Trap: Eliminating Daily PFAS Exposure

I have flossed every morning for decades as a non-negotiable pillar of oral hygiene. About three years ago, I came across verified consumer testing showing that many leading “glide” dental flosses are coated with PTFE / PFAS (”forever chemicals”) to reduce friction between tight teeth.

Every morning, that non-stick coating experiences direct mechanical friction against the teeth and gumline, creating micro-exposure directly at the vascular margins of the mouth.

The Swap: I switched to Eco-Dent Premium Floss, formulated without PFAS coatings, synthetic lubricants, or artificial flavorings, utilizing plant-derived waxes and essential oils instead. It glides smoothly, cleans effectively, and eliminates an unnecessary chemical input.

Pro-Tip: Ask your dental hygienist. Many modern biological and forward-thinking dental practices now offer non-PFAS floss and fluoride-free polishes upon request.

3. Clean Toothpaste: Dropping Fluoride, SLS, and Synthetic Preservatives

Over a decade ago, I eliminated conventional toothpaste containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), artificial dyes, and fluoride.

Current Daily Driver: Burt’s Bees Charcoal + Whitening Fluoride-Free Toothpaste.

The Criteria: Zero SLS, zero triclosan, zero artificial sweeteners or dyes, and zero synthetic parabens. Swapping out your daily soap, dental floss, and toothpaste removes chronic micro-exposures from your biological accounting, moving your healthspan metrics steadily in the right direction.

Next week, in Experience Note #7, we transition from personal environmental controls to Biometric Monitoring: How I track weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat, and visceral trends to validate training and eating results and training readiness.

Until then—here’s to building the best version of you!

Disclaimer: Content shared through The UUHF Life is for informational/educational purposes only based on N-of-1 personal experience and research. That is 112 ounces—just shy of a full gallon, or nearly 8 pounds of liquid ingested every single day. When you are consuming that much mass daily, ensuring it contains near-zero impurities is essential.

1. The 20-Year Legacy RO Setup

Over 20 years ago, we installed our first conventional under-sink RO system alongside a whole-house filtration and softening setup. It included a standard multi-stage filter array (sediment, carbon, and RO membrane), a pressurized storage tank, a dedicated stainless steel faucet, and an inline remineralization and pH-rebalancing cartridge.

We used it for everything: drinking, washing produce, rinsing meats and fish, making coffee, and cooking. The water tasted clean, but over the years, conventional systems revealed a major blind spot: a complete lack of real-time diagnostics.

With legacy systems, you have no way to know:

The exact condition or degradation of individual filter stages.

Whether the water coming out of the spigot meets target purity.

Whether the remineralization and pH rebalancing stages are still functioning effectively between annual service visits.

2. The Evolved System: Upgrading to Cloud RO

About two years ago, my brother-in-law was researching RO systems and asked for my input on a modernized system from a company called Cloud RO. After thoroughly evaluating the technical specifications against legacy hardware, I was convinced. I purchased a unit and installed it in our second residence a little over a year ago.

(As always: I purchase 100% of my equipment with my own money. I have zero sponsors, accept no free products, and only share tools I personally test, maintain, and validate.)

What sets the modern system apart:

NSF Certified: Verified filtration standards for peace of mind.

Live Telemetry (Smartphone App): Real-time monitoring of drinking water quality in terms of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), total gallons consumed, water bottles saved and PH/remineralization metrics.

Proactive Maintenance: Clear filter end-of-life notifications and seamless cartridge replenishment, direct from Cloud.

DIY Friendly: Fast, mess-free cartridge swaps that don’t require calling out a service technician, using a quarter counter-clockwise turn to release the old cartridges and then lift out. To re-install you just reverse the motion.

With our primary residence’s older system reaching the end of its useful lifespan, I recently upgraded it to the Cloud RO system as well.

Key Takeaway

Installing and exclusively using clean, remineralized RO water for drinking, food preparation, and cooking removes a massive daily toxic load before it ever reaches your cells. My current, evolved sleep mantra is simple: Guard your sleep routine like your life depends on it, because it absolutely does.

During the early stages of my healthspan journey, I had no real way of knowing how well my adjustments were working. Sure, I could feel better or more energetic on certain days and assume I slept well. Or I could feel sluggish, dealing with brain fog, and blame a bad night’s sleep.

Thanks for reading The UUHF Life! For me, hitting a consistent 7 to 8 hours with optimized deep and REM cycles is the ultimate “plus” on my daily health accounting sheet. It is foundational for mental, physical, and cellular recovery.

The Protocol: My Core Sleep Pillars

Through years of peer-reviewed reading, research, and relentless trial and error, I’ve dialed in the specific “prongs” that contribute to a calm, restorative, and brain-recharging sleep.

1. Timing & Circadian Rhythm

Strict Windows: Go to sleep and wake up within the exact same 30-minute window every day to synchronize circadian rhythms.

The Noon Cutoff: No caffeine after 12:00 PM. Its sleep-disrupting impacts extend far longer into the evening than most people realize.

2. Metabolic Management

The Fasting Buffer: Stop eating 2.5 to 3 hours before bedtime. If your body is busy redirecting blood flow to digest food in your stomach, that blood isn’t available to clear waste and “flush” your brain while you sleep.

Alcohol Timing: Avoid alcohol within 3 hours of bed. If consuming it earlier, strictly limit intake (maximum 1 drink for women, 2 for men) to protect REM cycles.

3. Activity & Physiology

Daytime Output: Consistent daytime exercise drives the physiological need for restorative deep sleep.

The Evening Cool-Down: No strenuous physical activity or targeted exercise within 2 to 3 hours of bedtime. You need this window to let your core body temperature and heart rate drop.

Targeted Compression Recovery: On days featuring high-intensity workouts or heavy physical property maintenance, I utilize compression therapy (legs and hips) before winding down. By flushing metabolic waste and accelerating muscle recovery early, it prevents late-night restlessness and muscle aches that disrupt deep sleep cycles.

4. The Sleep Environment

Light Auditing: Minimize blue light sources after twilight. Wear high-quality blue-light-filtering glasses if screens are unavoidable.

Thermal Optimization: Sleep in minimal clothing (just underwear) or no clothing to prevent nighttime overheating. Also, only use sheets and blankets when necessary to not feel cold.

Grounding: Utilize grounding sheets and pillowcases, maximizing direct skin contact to lower systemic inflammation while resting.

5. Targeted Supplementation

Magnesium Glycinate: Taking high-quality magnesium glycinate before bed aids muscular and nervous system relaxation.

Calm Sleep Capsules: On non-exercise days when my body isn’t naturally exhausted, I sometimes utilize a clean sleep capsule blend for an extra recovery assist.

Your Turn to Audit

Looking at this entire protocol at once can feel overwhelming. But just like the Master Accounting Spreadsheet you received in your inbox if / when you subscribed, you don’t have to change everything on day one.

Pick two or three variables this week. Track them. Look at your watch, band or ring data. See what moves your personal needle, and discard what doesn’t.

Let’s get to sleep, and let’s get to work.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or medical professional. Reluctantly, I filled it and took the first pill the next morning.

By afternoon, I felt distinctly “different.” My mind was racing, it was incredibly hard to concentrate, and staying focused felt impossible. The only variable I had changed was that single tablet. After calling my doctor’s office, the nurse instructed me to cut the tablet in half the next day.

The half-dose was slightly better, but the racing mind and focus issues remained at a level I simply wasn’t willing to live with. I decided it was time to research my thyroid and figure out how to manage it naturally.

Three Surprising Thyroid Discoveries

Digging into peer-reviewed studies and medical research, I uncovered three critical pieces of data that completely changed my approach:

Cruciferous Variables: Vegetables like cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and bok choy contain goitrogens, which can disrupt thyroid function. My family and I ate a lot of them because they are universally praised as healthy.

The Iodine Illusion: Proper iodine levels are key to thyroid health. While we used iodized salt, I learned that iodine exposed to air in standard shakers and open containers degrades significantly over time. It’s nearly impossible to know how much active iodine you’re actually getting from table salt.

The Zinc Conflict: I had recently started taking a daily zinc supplement to ward off colds. However, high-dose zinc supplementation can negatively impact specific thyroid parameters.

With these data points, I executed a shift: I cut out almost all cruciferous vegetables, stopped the zinc, and began tracking a precise daily dose of organic liquid iodine.

A few months later, I went in for my scheduled follow-up blood draw. The next day, the results came in: my thyroid parameters were safely back within the acceptable range.

I eventually sat down with my MD and shared my data. We reached a mutual, practitioner-led agreement: as long as my routine physical labs stayed normal, he was fully supportive of me continuing my protocol. If they fell out of range, I’d get back on the medication. Decades later, my parameters remain entirely normal.

Blood Pressure: The Fourth Glitch

In my early 50s, a new challenge emerged. Two years into a high-stress corporate position with increased responsibility, I was eating poorly and grabbing fast food for lunch to save time. My blood pressure began to inch up.

At my physical, my MD warned me that my numbers were borderline. Given a family history of heart disease, he noted that if the trend continued by my next physical, I’d likely be staring down lifelong blood pressure medication.

That warning prioritized my next mission. I changed my environment immediately:

Significantly reduced fast food by bringing home-prepared lunches to work.

Lowered sodium intake (which I no longer needed for iodine anyway).

Swapped heavy red meat consumption for cleaner proteins like fish and eggs.

By the next physical, the numbers dropped. I had successfully defended my health autonomy once again.

Committing to a Different Script

Look around today, and the “Standard Script” of aging is incredibly well-rehearsed. We are told to expect a slow, inevitable slide into polypharmacy—a statin for this, a thyroid pill for that, anti-inflammatories for the joints, and a scheduled surgery to “clean things up.”

Over the last eight years, I have rejected that script entirely. I turned my life into a rigorous, data-driven N-of-1 experiment. By treating my body like an accounting balance sheet—constantly auditing environmental and internal “pluses” and “minuses”—I have achieved what many told me was improbable.

At 60+, I am Unmedicated, Unoperated, and Healthspan Focused.

I worked with a chiropractor to make the biomechanical corrections my back required without relying on painkillers. I worked with my MD to stay off blood pressure and thyroid medications. And I conducted a comprehensive “toxic audit” of my daily environment to eliminate the hidden additives causing chronic inflammation.

This isn’t about “biohacking” for immortality. This is about autonomy. It’s the unshakeable conviction that the most powerful tools in your health arsenal aren’t found in a prescription bottle or an operating room—they are found in your own data, your own habits, and your own experiences.

Let’s get to work.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or medical professional. A few friends and I pitched a successful idea to fund and start a “Weightlifting Club” at the small engineering college we attended. It was an “if you build it, they will come” experience. The training sessions were incredibly rewarding, allowing us to fine-tune our lifting and teaching skills through real-world feedback.

The Day the Script Flipped

Having played little league baseball growing up, I jumped at the opportunity to join a workplace softball league. That went smoothly for the first few years, but eventually, my flat feet and old knee issues were replaced by acute back strain.

The issues were generally manageable—until one day in my late 20s, they weren’t.

Trying to beat out a throw to first base, I pushed off intensely on my last stride and stretched hard to toe the bag. I felt the injury in my lower right back muscle immediately. By the time I made it home, I could barely get out of the car due to the tightness and excruciating pain. I collapsed on the family room floor and began an icing routine.

The next morning, the pain of trying to stand was unbelievable. My MD took X-rays, which showed my spine being pulled significantly out of alignment by the contracting muscles, causing a severe arc in the lower third of my back.

The standard medical treatment I received?

20 minutes lying on my stomach with a heating pad.

Prescriptions for muscle relaxers and pain pills.

Crawling Across the Floor

I took the pills as soon as I got home, opted for ice over the recommended heat (knowing ice was better for acute inflammation), and tried to sleep. It was awful.

The easiest, least painful way to get to the bathroom was to crawl on my hands and knees. Even then, muscle spasms sent excruciating waves through my back so violently that I would collapse entirely onto the floor until they subsided.

After four days of a miserable, failed attempt to return to work, I knew I needed a different path to heal. I booked an appointment with a highly recommended chiropractor kinesiologist who had helped me with lifting injuries in the past.

The intake was thorough. She performed targeted adjustments to address the muscle impacts, prescribed dedicated stretching, and—crucially—measured me for custom orthotics.

The Long-Term Accounting

I never went back to pain pills or muscle relaxers.

Over the next 25 years, I faced several other significant back, running, and water skiing injuries (including a severe latissimus dorsi tear). Instead of medicating, I chose to work through them systematically with rest, ice, and intentional stretching.

I have several friends, family members, and co-workers who chose back surgery instead. I can honestly say I would not consider any of those procedures successful to the point where they could return to the activities they loved. Managing your own mechanical health takes work—but the autonomy is worth it.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or medical professional. Every day ended the same way: a dull ache that sent me home to take an aspirin and curl up in a ball until the world stopped spinning. Like most, I was already on the “Standard Script”-symptom appears, pill prescribed, “new normal” accepted.

Then, a chance encounter with a chiropractor changed everything. He didn’t look for a chemical to dull the pain; he looked for a mechanical reason for its existence. He corrected my alignment, and the headaches vanished. That was my first “glitch in the matrix” moment. It planted a seed of curiosity: If we can fix the root cause mechanically, why do we settle for a chemical life sentence?

The Cost of “Powering Through” My second glitch arrived on a high jump mat in Junior High. I was a solid contributor, having just cleared 5’10”. But during the final meet, my launching knee gave out. Driven by stupid pride, I powered through. The cost? A swollen, incapacitated knee, a lost league championship for my team, and a lesson in the dangers of ignoring your mechanics.

I had flat feet—so flat that a wet footprint on pavement shows no arch at all. But instead of fixing the foundation, I doubled down, joining the cross-country team against my doctor’s advice. I loved the run, but my knees paid the price. I was stuck in a cycle of injury, ice, and “pushing through”—until I finally realized that my passion was writing checks my mechanics couldn’t cash.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or medical professional.
